ECONOMY NEWS

  • Sheep producers across Montana are facing mounting pressure from imported lamb from Australia and New Zealand—making it harder for family-run operations to stay profitable. Senator Steve Daines called for a federal review on Jan. 9 to help secure fair competition for domestic producers.  KPAX

  • University of Montana President Seth Bodnar will step down after eight years; his resignation follows reports linking him to a potential Senate run — leaving questions about the school’s future leadership.  Newstalk KGVO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Montana DEQ closed public comment on its draft stream pH sampling protocol, and water watchdogs including Upper Missouri Waterkeeper and Montana Environmental Information Center say the method may miss harmful acidity peaks without continuous, growing-season sampling.   • Economics professor Nicole Karwowski's study showed that restoring 100 acres of wetlands in Montana improved nitrogen levels by 8% and generated nearly $200 million in benefits yearly. The research supports continued federal funding for farmer-led wetland restoration (which helps both water quality and agriculture).  Montana Public Radio

  • The legislature’s Economic Affairs Interim committee led by Speaker Ler is studying rising property insurance rates (fueled by higher payouts, extreme weather and increased building costs) as a panel of insurance and consumer experts gathers data to guide future decisions.  Missoula Current
  • Ahead of School Choice Week, Governor Greg Gianforte announced in Helena that Montana has opted in to a federal tax credit scholarship program. Donors can claim a nonrefundable tax credit of up to $1,700 for contributions to approved K-12 scholarship organizations starting January 1, 2027 — credits available until the statewide cap is reached.  KPAX

  • Providence will open a new Southgate Health Center later this month in Midtown at the Southgate Mall Development next to Bob Ward’s — offering primary and urgent care from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and cardiology services for residents from Miller Creek and Lolo.  Newstalk KGVO
