Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 28th of March.

CRIME NEWS

  • Residents in Missoula are warned of a fraudulent fundraising scam when an Uber driver falsely claims to support the Poverello Center—donors are urged to verify that donation requests come from legitimate sources.  Newstalk KGVO
  • Former Missoula emergency room doctor Tyler Hurst appeared via video in District Court on March 27 as he faced a status update for a trial set for next February—he is charged with four counts of felony sexual intercourse without consent and three counts of sexual assault after being accused of sexually assaulting at least 15 patients at Community Medical Center between 2017 and late 2023.  KPAX

EDUCATION NEWS

  • PEAS Farm on north Missoula has begun its spring growing season on a 10-acre site run by Garden City Harvest and the University of Montana. The farm uses nearly half its land to grow fresh produce for the food bank, senior market and CSA — and it serves as a classroom for Environmental Studies students while hosting a summer camp for local kids.  MontanaRightNow
  • Gov. Gianforte visited a Bonner School first-grade class on March 27 to promote his plan to restrict cell phone use in classrooms and asked lawmakers for a million dollars to help pay for supplies to enforce the ban—lawmakers later voted to slash the funding request even as many districts already saw improved student focus under existing bans.  Montana Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Kristin Bail will take over as acting regional forester for the U.S. Forest Service Northern Region starting March 31 as she will oversee nine national forests and one national grassland across Idaho, Montana and North Dakota. • Rep. Brad Barker, R-Luther, introduced House Bills 841 and 842 during a House Taxation Committee hearing on Wednesday to ask voters if a statewide 4% sales tax should help lower property taxes. HB 842 would set a referendum for November 2026 while HB 841 proposes a constitutional amendment—guaranteeing that tax revenue only goes toward reducing property taxes.  Missoula Current
  • Missoula Airport will close its main runway from Sept. 2 to Sept. 7 for renovations, stopping all flights during that period. Deputy director Tim Damrow said the project follows a terminal upgrade three years ago and includes a bid from Schellinger Construction for over $18 million.  KPAX
