- ➤ Montana judges may be required to take child abuse and domestic violence training if Senate Bill 318 (Brody’s Law) passes the House. The bill, named for a child victim whose mother testified at a hearing, passed the Senate by a vote of 47 to 3 and now awaits House review. Missoula Current
- ➤ On April 1, the City of Missoula and the Poverello Center held a meeting about closing the Johnson Street Shelter by the end of August and said they will lower bed numbers by 30 each month using a lottery system — residents may still sleep without a bed. City officials added they are launching a housing sprint and working with partner groups for winter shelter — the plan follows a one-time federal funding gap. MontanaRightNow
- ➤ Montana lawmakers are working on two bills that would change what can be bought with SNAP benefits—one bill would ban soda and candy while the other would restrict spending to healthy items like fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat, and fish. Both proposals need a federal waiver and have sparked concerns among industry groups and food banks. Missoulian
- ➤ The Montana Senate punished former Senate President Jason Ellsworth by removing him from all committees and permanently barring him from the Senate floor—he will continue to vote remotely. The action follows an ethics investigation into his dealings with a business associate and was approved by 44 of 50 senators. Missoula Current
- ➤ Today, lawmakers are debating nearly $450 million in spending to expand Montana’s prison system as part of House Bill 2, which includes tripling payments to CoreCivic for out-of-state beds and planning for 500 new in-state beds to ease overcrowding with 600 of 2,900 inmates housed out-of-state — Rep. Eric Matthews held his nose while voting on the bill, reflecting concerns about the long-term reliability of these placements. The debate comes as officials stress the urgent need to reduce backups in county jails and better care for Montanans in the criminal justice system. Missoulian
