Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 8th of April.
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ FBI agents are deployed to Montana Indian reservations for Operation Not Forgotten—a six-month federal effort to solve unresolved violent crimes including the case of Jermain Charlo, who was last seen in 2018—by teaming with the Bureau of Indian Affairs Missing and Murdered unit and tribal law enforcement. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Scientists examined snow samples from 48 sites in the Rocky Mountains and found that mercury and other metals are mainly coming from mining in the Pacific Northwest, Idaho, and Montana—although levels remain within EPA guidelines. The study helps show how winter storms carry contaminants and could inform future snowpack management. Newstalk KGVO
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Crews began a 1.6 million dollar project to install dark sky-compliant LED lighting on the Bitterroot Trail earlier this month, and work will continue until late August. The upgrade—fully funded by the Missoula Redevelopment Agency—covers the urban core from the Milwaukee Trail connection to the pedestrian bridge and will narrow the path instead of closing it entirely during weekdays. - ➤ Montana drivers must update their state-issued IDs by May 7 to fly and enter federal buildings — the new Real ID requires a birth certificate or passport and one document showing your address, and getting it takes less than 15 minutes if you book an appointment. For those without a passport, the Real ID is the only option to meet federal travel and access rules. Newstalk KGVO
- ➤ Resident hunters are urging a change to a 2023 law that gave free deer and elk licenses to nonresident landowners with large properties, and on Saturday the House passed HB 907 to end the free license plan. The bill keeps a system where landowners can buy bonus points for higher permit odds if they allow public access—residents now brace for potential Senate opposition. Missoula Current
- ➤ Lawmakers are discussing bills that would let cities fine and manage urban camping to help with the rise of homelessness in Montana—Rep. Overstreet’s proposals now await a full Senate vote. Supporters say the changes give local governments needed control over public areas—while opponents worry fines will hurt the unhoused. Missoula Current
- ➤ Lawmakers passed HB848 with a 63-35 vote on Saturday morning and sent it to the Senate to create the Big Sky Rail account, which would give the Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority $2 million a year until June 30, 2031 — funding planning, outreach and helping local governments apply for larger grants while not paying for new rail construction. The bill received bipartisan support from local business and elected officials even as some legislators questioned its fiscal impact. Missoula Current
