Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 10th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Project Community Connect returns to Missoula tomorrow as Missoula Public Library hosts its 16th annual event offering free housing, mental health, dental and veteran services provided by 75 volunteers. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and expects about 400 attendees—organizers are still looking for volunteers to offer free haircuts.  KPAX

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Bernice's Bakery — a busy local spot — is starting a renovation expansion now to prepare for its 47th birthday in July. Work is underway with a new sidewalk, interior demolition, and seating updates while customers use the side door.  Newstalk KGVO

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new study by SmileHub.org shows Montana ranks sixth for the arts, noting that 70% of adults create art and the state benefits from no sales tax while art education ranks lower. The report highlights Montana’s creative community—helped by renowned influences like Charles M. Russell—and shows an ongoing trend in local venues.  Newstalk KGVO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Protect the Clearwater is challenging a state permit for a gravel pit that lies between Clearwater Wildlife Management Area and Elbow Lake near Clearwater Junction as Judge Halligan heard arguments on whether the state must allow public comment before a permit is given. The legal debate will test MEPA rules — it might change how permits are reviewed — and the decision could impact local water quality.  Missoula Current

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Missoula City Council approved a new annexation off California Street that adds land to the city and rezones the corner lot at 400 California Street for a dense mixed-use project with over 200 housing units plus local businesses—developers must extend a water main and upgrade streets before building begins.  MontanaRightNow
  • Lawmakers have yet to agree on a plan to provide long-term property tax relief as tax bills are set to rise 11% statewide (options include permanent reforms or stop-gap rebates). The legislative session ends on May 5th (raising concerns for homeowners on fixed incomes) and delays may force a special session before a clear solution emerges.  Missoulian
