Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 21st of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Downtown Missoula Partnership will raise $500,000 this fall to complete Caras Park’s upgrade by replacing its 28-year-old canopy — a project that follows decades of improvements, and a Montana court will decide on a law that limits bathroom and locker room use today. Over the weekend, five people died in road accidents from speeding, alcohol and no seat belts — nearly 1,000 tribal dancers performed at UM’s Kyiyo Pow Wow with about 5,000 in attendance.  Newstalk KGVO

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Kyiyo Pow Wow took place Friday and Saturday at the University of Montana’s Adams Center, where thousands enjoyed dancing, singing and storytelling — a celebration of Indigenous heritage organized by UM students. The free event ended Saturday at 6 p.m. with the final grand entry — marking a weekend of cultural unity.  KPAX

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montana Department of Transportation and Highmark Traffic Services will start epoxy striping on Reserve Street from Brooks Street to Interstate 90 the week of April 27 and expect to finish by the end of May. Crews will work nightly from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday—drivers should expect slower speeds and a single lane in the project area.  KPAX
  • Missoula County is reminding community partners and non-profits to submit their applications for substance abuse prevention funding by Friday, May 9—this grant from the Substance Abuse Prevention Mill Levy approved in 2008 will support youth programs and will be reviewed by a citizen committee before county commissioners make final decisions.  MontanaRightNow

HEALTH NEWS

  • Missoula’s Cathryn Raan is following a three-month wild food diet from April through June as part of the Wildbiome Project, a citizen science study that will collect health data on foraged and hunted foods.
