Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 23rd of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Dozens of service providers gathered at the Missoula Public Library earlier this month to offer food, clothes, eye care and legal help as the city prepared to close one of its homeless shelters by the end of summer — a step taken as federal funding cuts have pressured essential support services. City officials and community advocates said the event helped connect over 150 residents with vital resources.  Montana Public Radio

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 17th, a sheriff’s detective in Missoula acted on an informant tip about a white and black Ford Mustang reported at the Otis Street apartments; officers stopped the car and arrested 57-year-old Kenny Brown (who admitted to meth use) on charges of dangerous drugs possession and a second DUI (after he showed signs of impairment).  Newstalk KGVO

CULTURE NEWS

  • The 56th annual Kyiyo Pow Wow took place in Missoula over the weekend — thousands gathered at the UM Adams Center on April 18 to witness lively dance performances and enjoy food trucks and vendors. The event celebrated Native American traditions and brought together community members from across the region in a vibrant cultural display.  Montana Public Radio

ECONOMY NEWS

  • UM researchers from the Institute for Tourism and Recreation Research are studying Montana’s dark sky tourism opportunities through the Trail to the Stars initiative, which features over 45 stargazing sites on protected lands. The study shows that reducing light pollution can boost local economies & support sustainable travel while protecting natural resources.  Missoula Current

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Missoula Public Health will host the 4th annual Roll & Read event on May 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at McCormick Park—families with children under 8 can visit interactive reading stations staffed by firefighters, Red Cross members, and volunteers to boost early childhood literacy and learn about preventing adverse childhood experiences.  MontanaRightNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missoula County accepted the modular bathrooms from the soon-to-be-closed Johnson Street shelter, saving $120,000 in construction costs for the Temporary Safe Outdoor Space—funds that will support the city's housing sprint to help house displaced residents. The city plans to close the shelter later this year amid its broader effort to address homelessness.  Missoula Current
  • On Monday, Missoula City Council members warned that proposed federal cuts to Medicaid, a plan to reduce spending by $880 billion over 10 years, will hurt local health services and strain budgets. They noted that although state lawmakers reauthorized Medicaid expansion, local governments now face extra funding responsibilities + rising cost pressures if the cuts go through.  Missoula Current
  • The council approved a 170-unit senior apartment complex that offers a pool, dog park, and fitness center—though it will not include a commercial kitchen or medical services.  Missoulian
