COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ A Missoula community land trust rebranded as Front Step CLT on Monday to better reflect its growing work on affordable housing. The group, which began in 1996 to help low-income neighborhoods, is now planning a mixed-use project off Scott Street—featuring income-restricted condominiums—aimed at easing gentrification risks. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Yesterday, the Missoula Police Department said they are still searching for 42-year-old Nicole Heimer, who was reported missing on April 22 and last seen at the Sawmill Gulch trailhead on April 15. Search teams from MCSAR, the Sheriff’s Office, and the U.S. Forest Service used ground teams, K9 units, drones, and motorized assets—logging over 275 miles and 150 hours of effort—and will resume work if new tips emerge. - ➤ Missoula Police Department, Missoula County Search and Rescue, the County Sheriff’s Office and the U.S. Forest Service have spent 150 hours searching near the upper Rattlesnake area for Nicole Heimer after her vehicle was found at the Sawmill Gulch trailhead on April 15 and she was reported missing on April 22 + the agencies are ready to resume efforts if new tips emerge. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Dr. Garvin Shallenberger and his UM students built Missoula’s first radio transmitter in the early 1920s and launched an experimental station called KFLW that broadcast local concerts and educational programs. Their work led to the later licensing of KUOM and marked an important step in the city’s radio history (Shallenberger’s legacy is still remembered). Missoula Current
- ➤ Downtown Missoula will host the 19th annual River City Roots Festival on August 22-23, 2025—a free event featuring live music, art displays, a 4-mile run and family-friendly activities at Caras Park. Friday night will showcase Big Richard promoting their debut album while Saturday at 8:30 p.m. the Kyle Tuttle Band will perform among a full schedule of local acts. MontanaRightNow
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Monday, the Legislature began its final week with only seven days remaining as lawmakers debated key measures such as House Bill 2—the $16.6 billion state budget bill pending a final House vote—and property tax plans headed to Tuesday conference committees at 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. Also on Monday, Governor Gianforte signed House Bill 337 that lowers Montana's income tax and is expected to reduce collections by over $250 million a year. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A multidrug-resistant fungal infection called Candida auris was reported in Montana, affecting patients in hospitals and nursing homes (fewer than five cases confirmed) and spreading through invasive medical devices and surfaces. - ➤ Representatives from the Missoula Fire Department shined at the 2025 West Region Classic of the Firefighter Challenge Championship Series at Utah State Fairpark and Event Center in Salt Lake City, with Quinlan Roe winning his division in a 1:35.58 run that earned him automatic induction into the Lion’s Den—joining teammates Tyson Whalen, who placed third, and Dani Hicks, who placed second.
