ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After a La Nina winter gave enough snow for skiers, warm and dry April weather left mountain basins around Missoula with only 90% of average snowpack and some as low as 76%—showing that drought conditions remain. More rain is forecast in the next two weeks while higher temperatures through July may lower streamflows and raise wildfire risk—adding to the ongoing concerns.  Missoula Current

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials approved a purchase of 16 acres along the Clark Fork River for a beginner mountain bike setting. The Park and Recreation Department said the new space—chosen for its safe terrain—will serve as a training area for new riders.  Missoulian
  • A new eight-state poll by the National Wildlife Federation shows that most Westerners — including 83% of Montanans — oppose Congressional proposals that would lower fees and limit public input on public lands. The poll comes as lawmakers consider easing oil and gas leasing rules during the budget reconciliation process.  Missoula Current
  • City and county officials approved a $293,000 operations and maintenance budget plus a $246,000 capital improvement budget for the historic federal building downtown, with costs split equally for this fiscal year. Planned upgrades will begin next year when external funding helps cover key projects like asbestos and lead-based paint abatement and improved accessibility.  Missoula Current
