EDUCATION NEWS

  • School districts in Montana are applying for funds to raise teacher pay after Gov. Gianforte signed the STARS Act last week — a move designed to boost classroom salaries. Districts must certify by May 15 that their base teacher pay will reach at least $41,613 for the 2026 fiscal year — some have already met the requirement while others work with boards and unions.  Missoula Current

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Workers planted 24,000 ponderosa pine seedlings on the lower slopes of Lolo Peak's former ski runs near Highway 93 as part of a project to restore forest cover with help from Montana Forest Consultants, American Forests, and Lolo Ranch LLC + the DNRC. Future phases will add western larch to complete the reforestation over the next decade.  Missoula Current
  • Forest Service Employees for Environmental Ethics filed a federal lawsuit in Montana alleging that the agency’s aerial fire retardants contain toxic metals that violate the Endangered Species Act— the suit also names the Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service for issuing allegedly flawed biological opinions. The group said recent studies showed heavy metal levels that could harm aquatic species and no hearing has been scheduled.  Missoulian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Andrea Davis said that the Poverello Center project for homeless veterans at the old Clark Fork Inn on West Broadway will soon move toward construction—backed by nearly $2 million in federal and local funding, including a $1 million grant from the VA. The redevelopment will create 17 private living units to improve housing conditions for veterans.  KPAX
  • City officials said that the Poverello Center is moving ahead with plans to redevelop the old Clark Fork Inn on West Broadway into transitional housing for homeless veterans after years of delay, with funds from state grants, county, and federal aid supporting design work— the new project will include about 17 private living units to give veterans more privacy.  Missoula Current
  • Several Missoula City Council races are attracting attention as candidates file ahead of the 2025 election, with tight contests in Wards Three and Six. In addition, Ward One sees incumbent Jennifer Savage not running while Elizabeth Craske and Lucas Moody compete, Ward Two and Ward Four host active races, Ward Five remains unchallenged, and Ward Six will feature both a head-to-head contest and a rematch as filing will be due by June 16 — a growing field that signals a competitive election ahead.  MontanaRightNow
  • The Montana Legislature passed major changes to property and income taxes this session as senators Greg Hertz and Ellie Boldman said the complex system is shifting the burden from homeowners to large businesses and secondary property owners—actions that may not fix housing affordability.  Missoulian
