Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 20th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Smokejumpers from near and far will gather in Missoula this summer from June 20-22 at the University of Montana campus — the reunion will honor 85 years of their service fighting wildfires and protecting the community. The event will celebrate these brave firefighters and their ongoing commitment to safety.  Newstalk KGVO

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Hundreds of local officials and community members gathered on Friday at the former Roseburg Forest Products factory in Missoula for Story House Inc.’s ribbon-cutting ceremony to launch a new film and television production campus that will create over 400 jobs. The project will add five premium sound stages and 60,000 square feet of production offices — the first phase of a five- to six-year plan to transform an abandoned site into a film village.  Missoulian

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy analysis shows Montana gas prices have risen 1.1 cents per gallon in the past week to average $3.17 today and stations in Missoula set prices around $3.19 on Monday. The state’s prices are 27.6 cents lower than a year ago and rank 12th nationally—national averages climbed 6.1 cents to $3.14 today.  Newstalk KGVO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Missoula phlox—found only on our local hills—is blooming along the Waterworks Ridge Trail, and to protect these plants from trampling, Parks and Recreation has put a temporary leash restriction for pets that will last until most of the flowers bloom. Researchers from the University of Montana are also studying the phlox to learn more about its health over time.  KPAX
  • City officials are upgrading the Missoula compost facility that uses human waste from the sewer to create compost. Some residents worry that forever chemicals—PFAS—may impact local safety.  Missoulian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A Missoula judge issued a preliminary injunction Friday that stops the state from enforcing House Bill 121 — a law that requires public facilities to assign bathrooms based on biological sex at birth. The decision will remain until a final ruling is made — reflecting the judge's view that the state has not provided enough evidence to justify the law.  Missoula Current
  • The city is planning a redevelopment of the Johnson Street property after shelter operations wind down, with proposals for about 150 to 250 residential units and some retail and community space—officials will hold a second open house early next month from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Floriculture Building at the Missoula County Fairgrounds.  Missoula Current
  • Missoula Parks and Recreation released a draft of the PROST 2040 Master Plan on Friday and is asking for public input online and in person until June 3. The department held an open house on Monday to gather feedback that will help shape the city's parks, trails, and outdoor spaces for the next 15 years.  KPAX
  • City officials and the consultant team GGLO are working on a plan to redevelop the eight acres on Johnson Street that remain after the city turned a warehouse emergency shelter into a permanent facility on land bought in 2017 — which already includes a four-acre park—and now aims to build 150 to 250 homes with some retail spaces. An open house will be held early next month from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Floriculture Building at the Missoula County Fairgrounds to gather public input on the vision.  KPAX
