Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 21st of May.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Montana and Blackfoot Communications partnered to launch a cybersecurity program aimed at strengthening defenses in rural areas — the initiative will give local governments, schools, and utility companies hands-on training to address a workforce gap.  Missoula Current

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Missoula rivers are dangerous this spring as rising water, cold currents, and hidden logs increase risks for water activities. Experts from Search and Rescue and the Fire Department advise wearing personal flotation devices—using the buddy system and checking weather updates to keep safe.  Newstalk KGVO
  • Since April, crews at Glacier National Park have been plowing the Going-to-the-Sun-Road to get it ready for summer as they face avalanche dangers and rock falls. The park warns drivers to avoid areas where rocks may fall — no opening day has been set yet.  Missoula Current
  • As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks urges boaters to check water conditions, wear lifejackets, and visit inspection stations to prevent invasive species—rivers are running high and hidden debris poses dangers. The Missoula office will inspect items from outside the area to keep local waters safe.  MontanaRightNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Greg Gianforte signed two key bills that lower property tax rates on most primary residences starting in 2026 and set an interim system for 2025 that raises rates on higher value homes. The state also will offer a one-time rebate up to $400 this year on a primary residence, and homeowners must apply to receive the rebate (postcards will be sent next month).  Missoula Current
  • Gov. Gianforte vetoed a bill that would have made insurance companies cover hearing aids for all ages, saying it would cost taxpayers $3.5 million and add pressure on state workers—insurers will continue covering only individuals under 18.  Missoula Current
  • On Monday night, Missoula City Council voted 8—1 to raise the hotel fee from $2 to $4 per night to fund tourism marketing and events as hotel stays generate nearly $80 million in revenue each year. The measure comes amid falling occupancy rates and concerns that the increase may impact both out-of-state visitors and local guests.  Missoula Current
  • Residents near Missoula College experienced extra visits from law enforcement, fire, and EMS during the week of May 19—23. A drill held on May 20 tested active attack response and another will take place on May 23 to improve teamwork among responders.  MontanaRightNow
