COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Missoula's free bus service, Mountain Line, won the 2026 Community Transportation System of the Year award at CTAA Expo in Omaha and was celebrated Thursday at the Downtown Transfer Station with Mayor Andrea Davis present. The system will expand with transfer station renovations and a new maintenance facility by 2028.  KPAX
  • The Glacier National Park Conservancy is asking the public to name its new 9-year-old chestnut horse, now known as 'Hey You,' with submissions open until Monday, May 25 and a vote on finalists scheduled from May 28 to June 4 (the horse will join the park's 66-animal stock team that moves supplies to remote areas).  KPAX

  • At a recent Missoula meeting, local groups warned about an emerging AI data center boom — a trend they say mirrors past tech booms — as billionaire-backed firms plan to use local resources for private profit.  Missoulian

  • Woodtick Music Festival is set to take place July 17-18 near Darby on Chaffin Creek Road just past Crystal Brook Ranch, offering two days of live indie, folk and experimental music along with onsite camping and vendors, with attendees advised to bring their own potable water.  Newstalk KGVO

  • Climate Smart Missoula planted seven trees on Missoula’s Northside on May 18 (with state grant funds) to cool urban heat as temperatures rose; the nonprofit plans to plant up to 75 trees over the next couple years to boost climate resilience.  Montana Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missoula City Council adopted a voluntary energy conservation standard Wednesday to set best practices for energy-efficient buildings amid the city's push for a cleaner future. Transportation planner Devin Filicchia said the program will serve as an educational tool and does not impose mandatory requirements.  Missoula Current

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Big Sky Eagles hit four homers in the sixth inning to secure a ticket to the state AA tournament + they will face Belgrade next week in Missoula.  Missoulian
  • Florence-Carlton's boys team won its first state title in State B golf while Lone Peak's girls claimed the team title, thanks to individual champion Cate Leydig; Manhattan's Blake Bentle also earned the boys' individual crown.  Missoulian
  • The Missoula Marathon sold out with a record 1,700 runners signing up for the 26.2-mile race. The event will run June 26 through June 28 (drawing participants from across the nation and overseas).  KPAX
