Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 24th of May.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Missoula will host Memorial Day wreath ceremonies on May 26 at 12 locations featuring full military honors—ranging from a 7 a.m. sunrise service to a 4 p.m. event with lunch at Sunset Memorial Gardens—and the Sunset Memorial Cemetery and Funeral Home will hold an annual open house with free refreshments, a barbecue, and tours on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.  Newstalk KGVO

CRIME NEWS

  • On May 21 at 12:06 p.m., Missoula police responded to reports of vandalism when they detained 65-year-old Katherine McElderry, who had been banned from the Senior Citizens Center since May 11 and broke a window during an argument with staff—she now faces felony burglary charges with a $5,000 bond and has six outstanding warrants.  Newstalk KGVO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Montana and Blackfoot Communications have launched a new cybersecurity program that gives training and hands-on experience to local governments, schools and utilities in rural Montana — the program also lets students build strong technical skills. Missoula College Dean Thomas Gallagher said the initiative will meet the growing demand for cybersecurity jobs.  MontanaRightNow

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Missoula Parks and Recreation has renewed 65 trail markers on Mount Jumbo by repurposing salvaged trees as part of its Zero Wood Waste project—this method saves money by milling logs into needed lumber. The city will start a similar project on Mount Sentinel next year.  KPAX

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montana enacted House Bill 588 that defines motorized scooters and single wheels for road use — the law gives them the same rights as bicycles and mopeds, limits speeds to 30 mph, requires white headlights and red reflectors, and bans their operation on sidewalks and bike paths to let riders travel without a driver’s license.  Missoula Current
  • Law enforcement and first responders in Western Montana are preparing for the 100 Deadliest Days as Memorial Day weekend travel increases traffic risks — officers plan to boost patrols and urge drivers to buckle up while rural routes face slower response times on busy highways like Highway 93.  KPAX
  • A new traffic signal — approved by the Missoula City Council — will be installed at the Orange and Cregg intersection near McCormick Park to improve safety as traffic increases. Construction will begin mid-June and finish by September, with most work scheduled outside rush hour.  MontanaRightNow
