- ➤ Gov. Gianforte signed a tax relief law that will cut owner-occupied home bills by about 18% on 2025 statements—while non-homestead properties like second homes and short-term rentals will see tax increases, with Missoula County rates expected to more than double by 2026. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new state law signed by Gov. Gianforte has shortened the filing window for Missoula City Council and mayoral candidates, and filings will take place from May 27 to June 11. City Clerk Claire Trimble — who stressed the importance of knowing the new dates — warned candidates not to delay their submissions at the Elections Office or online. MontanaRightNow
- ➤ Candidate Hayden Cook said Missoula must redesign the Reserve Street Corridor because over 30,000 vehicles pass through daily and more than 150 accidents occurred last year, with rising pedestrian risks and fatalities. He pointed to a study showing that expanding the road by 10 feet on each side may ease rush-hour congestion—prompting plans for improved crossings and smarter traffic signals. Missoula Current
- ➤ Federal officials are considering a plan to combine five wildfire response agencies into one Federal Wildland Fire Service to better support firefighters as wildfire season approaches. Montana Sen. Tim Sheehy said the proposed bill will cut bureaucratic red tape — and provide improved resources and funding to crews protecting local communities. Missoula Current
