COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A proposed Oregon ballot initiative that could make hunting, fishing, and farming practices illegal has moved closer to the November ballot and is causing Montana outdoorsmen to worry about threats to their food traditions and conservation efforts.  Newstalk KGVO

CULTURE NEWS

  • The historic Lolo School building was moved last night to its new home at the Holt Heritage Center on Highway 12 after the community raised about $50,000 to save it, and the move led to a brief closure on Highway 93.  Newstalk KGVO
  • Missoula will host several major concerts in June, featuring acts like Lord Huron, Dierks Bentley, Ziggy Marley, and the Zootown Music Festival across outdoor venues (including Kettlehouse Amphitheater). Local music fans can look forward to a lively summer season.  Newstalk KGVO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • UM ecologist Richard Hutto explained that high-severity wildfire is a natural part of Western forests and supports diverse species across different successional stages. He said logging projects may risk ecological balance (his research shows up to 85% of conifer forests have historically experienced severe fire).  Missoula Current

  • Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is gathering community input on corner crossing at a PL/PW advisory meeting on June 1 and 2 at the FWP Region 6 office in Glasgow (via Zoom).   • Mountain Line was named the top transit system and announced plans for a new hub near a familiar landing strip to support service and new routes beginning in July. CEO Jordan Hess said the facility (primarily funded by a federal grant) will secure operations for decades.  MontanaRightNow

  • Hundreds of dogs are set to compete this weekend at the annual Five Valley Kennel Club Show and Trials at the Missoula County Fairgrounds.
