ECONOMY NEWS

  • NorthWestern Energy raised electric rates by 17% on May 23 — adding about $17 extra to the monthly bills of roughly 400,000 customers. The Montana Public Service Commission is holding a public hearing in June to review the increase and may issue refunds if approved rates are lower.  KPAX

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fresh Fades, a local barbershop, has partnered with vocational rehab to let qualified high school students shadow barbers and earn $16.50 an hour while learning job skills and safe equipment use. The program is growing—educators, parents, and stylists are invited to support its expansion as students build careers in barbering.  MontanaRightNow

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Candidates for Missoula City Council in Wards 4 and 6 are campaigning to expand affordable housing and better serve those facing homelessness—each candidate offers new ideas to improve local government. In Ward 6, Chris Foster is challenging incumbent Kristen Jordan for a four-year term while Sean McCoy and Lynette Jonessian are running for a two-year term against incumbent Sandra Vasecka, and in Ward 4, David Quattrocchi stands as the sole challenger to incumbent Mike Nugent; candidate filing reopened on May 27.  Missoulian
  • Federal cuts by the Department of Government Efficiency ended 80 AmeriCorps jobs in Montana last month—nonprofits and agencies lost key help for food programs and other services. Local groups have raised funds to keep some staff—worries grow that further cuts may make it hard to serve the community.  Missoula Current
  • Montana updated its child car seat laws after Gov. Gianforte signed House Bill 586 into law, creating new safety standards based on children’s ages—requiring infants to ride rear-facing, toddlers to use forward-facing seats with harnesses, and older children to transition to booster seats or seat belts. The updated law replaces the single guideline from 1987 with detailed instructions for proper car seat usage while keeping penalties unchanged.  KPAX
