CRIME NEWS

  • The Missoula County Sheriff's Office is asking for help with any video footage from an assault with a weapon near Deer Creek Road at the Sha-Ron Fishing Access Site—deputies responded Sunday, June 1 at 7:00 p.m. when one person was taken to a local hospital and one was arrested—and detectives urge anyone who recorded activity between 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to come forward.  MontanaRightNow

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An international board released a study plan to address coal-mine pollution affecting Lake Koocanusa and the Kootenai River after tests showed high selenium levels from decades of mining. Canadian tribes and experts will offer public comments in a virtual session on July 8 — and the board will complete a draft report by Sept. 26 with final recommendations by Sept. 28 — with an estimated budget of $4.9 million.  Missoula Current
  • State, federal and local leaders met in Helena on Monday and warned that Montana may face a busier fire season as crews fought wildfires in western Montana and prepare for more fires in July when hot, dry weather could increase danger. The state upgraded helicopter operations and added about 30 frontline firefighters while urging people to follow fire rules—most fires start from human carelessness—to help protect communities.  Missoula Current

  • The Missoula City Council voted Monday night to raise parking fines, with increases for meter, improper parking, and residential permit violations set to take effect on January 1 + the changes are expected to lower citations by deterring repeat offenders.  KPAX
  • Missoula Mayor Andrea Davis announced the appointment of Lonnie Rash as the new fire chief to begin in July after Chief Gordy Hughes retires June 30. Rash, a Montana native with more than 25 years of fire service experience, is leading a project to build a $6.3 million fire station and renovate another — steps aimed at updating the department.  KPAX
  • On Monday night, the Missoula City Council adopted the Pride flag as the official flag to show the city's commitment to inclusivity and to oppose state flag rules—House Bill 819. Some community members said the move may not represent all local beliefs.  Missoula Current

HEALTH NEWS

  • Missoula’s new Hope Hospice Center celebrated its opening today with a ceremony and offers 12 private rooms, family visit areas, and spaces for cultural and religious practices — a 15,200 square foot facility built with over $15 million raised by community efforts. The center will begin operations by mid-July and is expected to serve around 3,000 patients in its first five years — making it Montana’s second dedicated hospice facility.  MontanaRightNow
