ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Most of Montana will face deepening drought and lower river flows this summer as dry conditions and declining snowpack reduce water levels in key rivers like the Clark Fork and Blackfoot. South-central streams remain normal to above while areas along the Rocky Mountain Front show below-normal flows—raising concerns for irrigation and fish health.  Missoula Current
  • An international board released a plan to study coal-mine water pollution in Lake Koocanusa and the Kootenai River. The board will hold a virtual listening session on July 8 at 6 p.m. for public comments and will issue a draft report by Sept. 26 — a final report is expected by Sept. 28 with a study cost estimated at $4.9 million.  KPAX

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Missoula City Council approved a resolution on Monday night to make the Pride flag the official city flag, now allowing it to be flown in schools and government buildings under Montana law. Gov. Gianforte criticized the decision, and council members said the move was a reaction to a law they felt targeted one group—state officials said the issue will be reviewed in the 2027 legislative session.  KPAX

HEALTH NEWS

  • St. Patrick Hospital said it will close its Family Maternity Center in Missoula by October because of lower birth numbers and staffing shortages — caregivers affected by the change can apply for open positions. The hospital will work with Western Montana Clinic and Community Medical Center — so that expectant mothers continue to receive care.  Missoula Current
