Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 7th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Missoula’s Providence St. Patrick hospital closed its labor and delivery unit on June 6th — the decision was made hours before the public announcement, and the hospital said expectant mothers would still get care during the transition. Flathead Lake in the Flathead River Basin will peak at 2892.3 ft on June 19 amid low water levels, and Lakeside and Somers communities welcomed a traffic safety vehicle donated by Montana Highway Patrol to deter speeders on Highway 93.  KPAX

CRIME NEWS

  • The Missoula County Attorney’s Office filed 10 felony complaints this week — with three family violence cases including assaults on a minor and two drunk driving incidents involving children — and attorney Matt Jennings urged parents to take a break during tense moments to avoid risking harm to their kids.  Newstalk KGVO

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new interpretive sign was unveiled today at a cemetery from the late 1800s to honor Missoula’s early Chinese community, with the Historic Preservation Office, Parks and Recreation and filmmakers of The Bodies Beneath Us working together — to mark an important part of our local history. Mayor Davis said the sign will help people learn about the past, and the documentary will air Sunday at the Roxy Theater with two evening showings — adding more insight into the community’s heritage.  MontanaRightNow

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A fire sparked by a burning vehicle along U.S. Highway 93 in the Mission Valley burned 25 acres and reached 10% containment about 2 miles south of Ravalli — firefighting teams used a helicopter and 10 engines while no structures were threatened.  KPAX
  • A water watchdog asked the EPA to enforce existing water quality standards after the Legislature passed three bills that removed numerical limits for nitrogen and phosphorus pollution. The Upper Missouri Waterkeeper sent a petition on Wednesday and warned the change could harm local water, fish and animals, as well as public health.  Missoula Current

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the City of Missoula revealed a draft of its new Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Plan after two years of work to set rules for easier charger installation and more public-private partnerships. The plan, set for adoption later this summer, calls for adding fast charging stations and updating land-use rules — steps that aim to boost EV access and lower emissions.  KPAX

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A Visual Capitalist report using 2024 data from Realtor.com shows Montana is now the least affordable state for buying a home—home prices rose 66% in four years while wages did not keep up, increasing the shortage of affordable housing.  Newstalk KGVO
