  • Montana Knife Company will open a new state-of-the-art facility near Missoula and plans to hire 100 to 150 new workers in the next couple of years; owner Josh Smith began making knives in his garage in 2020 and has already hired over 80 people, thanking local economic leaders for their support—his business is set for rapid growth.  Newstalk KGVO

CRIME NEWS

  • A grand jury indicted Treyson Sharp last week for shooting and killing Jadie Butterfly on the Blackfeet Reservation in December—he faces federal charges for involuntary manslaughter, unregistered firearm possession and criminal forfeiture along with additional charges in Blackfeet Tribal Court.  KPAX

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The human-caused Deer Fire 5 miles southeast of Missoula held at 75 acres as of Tuesday morning after it started on July 18th. Firefighters built firelines and used helicopters to drop water—roads and trails in Lolo National Forest were closed until further notice—to support the 179 people and multiple engines fighting the blaze.  KPAX

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Missoula will hold a public meeting today at 6:00 p.m. at the Missoula Public Library to discuss capacity, erosion, and stormwater quality issues in the High Park drainage — the city is preparing an engineering report to evaluate alternatives.  MontanaRightNow
  • The city's proposed budget for the new fiscal year will include a 3.5% tax increase and $4.4 million in new spending mainly for wage hikes and inflation adjustments—savings from reduced spending and fees helped lower the structural deficit and build cash reserves. Mayor Andrea Davis said the plan will close the Johnson Street shelter to save $1.8 million and that new taxable values will be released on August 4—steps meant to safeguard essential services.  Missoula Current
  • Donna Gaukler, the longtime Parks and Recreation director, is retiring this November after 34 years with the city — she led major projects such as Currents Aquatics Center and Fort Missoula Regional Park and an interim director, Ryan Applegate, will take over as she steps down.  Missoulian
