- ➤ On July 26, 2025, deputies responded to a disturbance at Ropers Lounge when bartender Jane Doe reported that Katrena Reed was using what appeared to be a gun's laser sight through the bar windows and then crashed her Jeep into Doe's car—Reed was arrested after a high-risk traffic stop and now faces charges of felony assault with a weapon and felony criminal mischief. - ➤ On Monday, the University of Montana’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research held a report in Helena where director Jeff Michael said tariffs are an economic shock that may affect Montana’s agriculture and construction sectors more than manufacturing—despite benefits from higher steel prices and federal tax changes also aimed at seniors, small businesses, and self-employed people. - ➤ The Montana Department of Labor and Industry announced a $4 million federal grant to start the state's first registered teacher apprenticeship program aimed at helping rural schools fill teacher shortages. A request for proposals will be issued between October and December and the first group of apprentices will start in summer or fall 2026 — a plan that lets teachers earn while they learn. - ➤ Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks recently launched an online Bear Relocation Dashboard that shows when and why bears are moved by displaying details such as species, general reasons, and the latest relocation date—this tool is meant to keep communities and landowners informed about bear management. - ➤ County commissioners approved the city's use of open-space funding Tuesday to secure the 16-acre Tipp property along the Clark Fork River off the Kim Williams trail east of Missoula. The project costs about $230,000—over half of which is donated—and it will be used for recreation and kids programming by the city. Missoula Current
- ➤ Missoula County Commissioners met this week to propose a 2026 budget that will boost property taxes by $5.7 million, meaning a typical $600,000 home will see about $83 more a year—funding planned increases in public safety staff. - ➤ A $24 million transportation grant to improve a train bridge along Highway 200 connecting East Missoula and Missoula was cut after passage of the Big Beautiful Bill. County Commissioner Dave Strohmaier and council member Stephanie Lemberg said the cancellation did not properly assess local safety needs (the project was part of the Neighborhood Access and Equity Grant Program) and vowed to pursue further transportation improvements.
