Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 8th of August.

CRIME NEWS

  • On August 4, 2025 at 12:46 a.m., a Missoula police officer stopped a 2017 Ford Escape for broken taillamps and found driver Sean Jensen, aged 30, with an expired license, no insurance, a strong odor of marijuana, marijuana pipes, and a plastic bag with a white powder that tested positive for methamphetamine; he now faces charges for felony criminal possession of dangerous drugs, DUI, driving without a valid license, and operating without insurance—his bond was set at $50,000.  Newstalk KGVO

CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend, from today to August 10, Missoula hosts a range of events including family shows like The SpongeBob Musical Youth Edition, ballpark fun with the Paddleheads, and three concerts at Kettlehouse featuring acts from My Morning Jacket to Weird Al Yankovic. Residents can also enjoy community highlights like recurring farmers' markets and Missoula Dead Day at Caras Park — all adding variety to local weekend celebrations.  Newstalk KGVO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After the Montana Supreme Court ordered a new review of the Laurel power plant, the Department of Environmental Quality published its revised assessment late last week to examine the plant's light pollution and emissions. Environmental advocates, including Anne Hedges of the Montana Environmental Information Center, said the analysis remains nearly identical to the original study and does not capture the plant’s lifetime emissions—comparable to those from 180,000 cars.  Montana Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missoula County voted on Thursday to place an $1.8 million levy on the ballot to fund much-needed repairs for roads, bridges, and trails—county officials say the measure is needed as current revenues only allow for a small fraction of the maintenance required. The levy would add about $26 a year for a $600,000 home as part of a broader plan to address a growing funding shortfall in local infrastructure.  KPAX
  • Today, the City of Missoula and private partners formed a task force to redevelop city-owned land—focusing on affordable housing and community needs—at Riverfront Triangle. City officials cautioned that rising construction costs and economic uncertainty may limit some redevelopment plans while efforts continue to balance feasibility with community goals.  KPAX
  • Missoula City Council members on Wednesday resisted amendments that would add costs to the FY26 budget while keeping other spending requests intact, plus Mayor Andrea Davis maintained a proposed $4.4 million increase to cover essential services as the city moves toward finalizing the budget this month.  Missoula Current
  • Missoula Mayor Andrea Davis held a press conference on Thursday to update plans for using city lands to help with affordable housing as rising costs have made it harder for locals to live here. She said projects like Southgate Crossing will be announced soon—she worked closely with City Councilors Mike Nugent and Gwen Jones and MEP CEO Grant Kier on these plans.  Newstalk KGVO
