CRIME NEWS

  • After a week-long manhunt, Michael Paul Brown—the suspect in the shooting deaths at the *Owl Bar* in Anaconda—was arrested near Ranch Bar just south of Highway 1 on Friday and is now held at Butte-Silver Bow Detention Center.  Missoula Current

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Montana was named one of the Peace Corps' Top Volunteer-Producing Colleges among medium-sized schools and has led in community and national service for three years in a row — a sign of its strong public service tradition. The school works with the Peace Corps through its Peace Corps Prep Program — training students for international volunteer work.  Newstalk KGVO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • EPA officials released long-awaited groundwater and soil test data from the former Smurfit-Stone site but said the full analysis will not be made public until November. Local advisory group members at a Frenchtown meeting expressed frustration with the slow cleanup process—warning that delays may keep harmful chemicals in the area.  Missoulian

  • Missoula officials have shifted priorities on city-owned lands by recommending that initial action focus on Southgate Crossing—while stalled plans for the old library and Sleepy Inn sites will be reexamined.  Missoulian

HEALTH NEWS

  • The University of Montana research center brought together health care leaders from across Montana in July to discuss clinical and translational research and improve the state’s health care workforce—meeting participants included hospitals, public health departments, and community partners. Tony Ward, the center’s director who helped secure an $11 million grant, said the growing partnership will lead to another meeting in 2026.  KPAX
