Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 2nd of September.

CULTURE NEWS

  • Humanities Montana lost all federal funding this spring, forcing layoffs of four staff and reducing its budget by 90%—a result of an NEH decision. Donations from the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Mellon Foundation will let the nonprofit operate for at least another year—its future now relies on private support as it hopes Congress will restore funding.  KPAX

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Missoula Public Library’s Bookmobile brings books and learning materials to children and families in the county as it carries about 1,100 items and hands-on activities to spark interest in reading. Later this month, the van will celebrate its one-year service as part of the Give a Child a Book campaign—an effort to expand access to library services.  KPAX

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Jim Harmon wraps up his two-part series on K. Ross Toole by detailing how he warned that corporate greed has long exploited Montana’s natural wealth—he urged local leaders to challenge powerful companies before future generations lose their opportunities. Toole criticized historical practices that favored outsiders and called on Montanans to demand action from their politicians.  Missoula Current
  • Missoula closed its largest homeless shelter without having set up a new safe option, leaving many people to sleep in cars, on riverbanks, or on the streets. Council member Daniel Carlino warned that spending millions to shift people from one unsafe location to another only deepens the crisis — urging for lasting, housing-first solutions.  Missoula Current

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Sunday night the Missoula PaddleHeads won 7—0 over the Boise Hawks to end a four-game losing streak and improve their record to 61—29; they will play six regular-season games in California starting Tuesday and host a playoff series a week from Thursday.  Missoulian
