BUSINESS NEWS

  • A knife made by Montana Knife Company was seen in Dexter: Resurrection with Michael C. Hall and Peter Dinklage. The company said it will open a new 50,000—square-foot facility in Missoula that is expected to create up to 200 jobs and include a coffee shop and store.  Newstalk KGVO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UM’s student financial services office is understaffed—six vacancies and high turnover have strained operations—as students work to pay tuition today. Executive director Lucy Logan said outdated systems and low wages make it hard to recruit experienced help and meet rising demands.  Missoulian

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Montana Department of Environmental Quality rejected a July 2 petition from the Lincoln County Commissioners to raise the selenium limit in Lake Koocanusa because there was not enough evidence of economic hardship. Officials said the current standard remains necessary as most selenium comes from Canadian mining—legal challenges are still pending—so the rule will remain in effect.  Missoula Current

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Montana Public Service Commission voted unanimously against a petition that would have required it to factor climate impacts into its work. Critics warned the decision delays proper review of utility costs linked to climate change—raising concerns over customer bills and environmental risks.  Missoula Current
  • Ballots have arrived in mailboxes for local elections where voters will choose mayors, city commissioners, and decide on tax increases—primary elections in Missoula, Helena, and Kalispell will be held on September 9 while Great Falls and Billings will send mail ballots starting October 15. A law effective October 1 will require voters using mail-in ballots to include their birth year and sign updated affirmation language.  Montana Public Radio

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The planning board recommended approval for the Paisley Park subdivision on Tuesday night at the future intersection of England Boulevard and Chuckwagon Drive. OO Land Holdings LLC plans a mix of single-family homes, condos, and multi-family units to be annexed into the city and help address Missoula’s housing shortage—integrating with surrounding growth.  Missoula Current

  • Alfredo Villa, named Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year for Missoula PaddleHeads in 2023, rejoined the team this week after a trade from the Ottawa Titans for future considerations—his return comes as the team prepares for playoffs next week with a rescheduled doubleheader game.  Missoulian
  • Montana has named redshirt sophomore Keali'i Ah Yat as its starting quarterback for the season opener against Central Washington this Saturday at 6 p.m. at Washington-Grizzly Stadium—he led fall camp and returns as the most experienced QB on the depth chart.  Missoula Current
