Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 18th of September.

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A consulting firm unveiled a flexible redevelopment vision for the city-owned parcel off Johnson Street that offers plans for multi-family housing and townhomes for various income levels. City Council, the Missoula Redevelopment Agency (MRA), and the Missoula Economic Partnership will guide next steps as funding, parking needs, and subsidy details are finalized while construction may start as soon as 2028.  Missoula Current
  • Missoula City Council approved a plan that lets Ward 1 voters choose their next council member in November instead of having members appoint one—this follows Jennifer Savage’s move from the ward and introduces candidates Elizabeth Craske and Lucas Moody. The winner will be sworn in after canvassing is finished, ensuring the seat is filled with a publicly elected leader.  Missoula Current
  • On Tuesday, a Helena district court judge awarded nearly $3M in attorney fees to the 16 plaintiffs in Held v Montana—an order following a 2023 trial that showed state greenhouse gas policies harmed their right to a clean environment. The Montana Department of Justice said it will appeal the decision while ten plaintiffs join a federal suit in Missoula.  Missoula Current
  • The Missoula City Council ruled that the Historic Preservation Commission erred in denying FAE Missoula a demolition permit for Old Post Hospital and returned the case to the historic preservation officer—who has 30 days to meet with FAE and develop a new redevelopment plan that may include restoration options.  Missoula Current

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nine veterans took part in the Wounded Warrior Project's Rolling Project Odyssey in Billings, a 12 week program that uses motorcycle riding as therapy for PTSD and isolation. Missoula veteran Kit Lowe said riding gives him freedom and helps him connect with fellow veterans — a tool that offers new coping skills.  KPAX
  • Today, Community Medical Center held a cord-cutting ceremony for its new birthing center as St. Patrick's Hospital prepares to close its maternity center next month. The center has three birthing suites—each with modern beds, tubs and support areas to give expecting families a safe, home-like option.  MontanaRightNow

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Missoula County approved a 56-unit subdivision plan to replace the old Lolo School on a 33-acre property that is partly too steep for development — county officials reserved over 16 acres as a dedicated park. The project will provide new housing while preserving park space for the community.  Missoulian

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Sept. 13 at Washington-Grizzly Stadium, the Montana Grizzlies beat No. 16 North Dakota 24-23 in a close game that raised the team’s confidence—senior safety Micah Harper and kicker Ty Morrison made key plays that helped the win.
