COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Humane Society of Western Montana hosted a puppy adoption event at the Missoula Dairy Queen (Higgins Avenue) last Sunday where Parfait, a 9-week-old puppy from a litter of eight, is still waiting for a home. The shelter said it faces a growing need for supplies as more animals arrive for adoption.  Newstalk KGVO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Forest Service announced that $8.7 million from the Community Wildfire Defense Fund will soon boost wildfire mitigation in the Northern Rockies—with $7.5 million going to Shoshone County for a hazardous fuels reduction project along I-90 and $1.2 million helping Missoula County plan a wildfire-adapted future. These funds will support local and state efforts to reduce fire risks ahead of the next wildfire season.  Newstalk KGVO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montana Public Service Commission vice president Jennifer Fielder wants to change rules so that three votes—instead of four—are needed to ask the governor to remove or suspend an elected commissioner. The proposed change comes amid disputes over commissioner Brad Molnar’s alleged misconduct and interference with an ongoing investigation, and Fielder will discuss it further at a public meeting.  Missoula Current
  • The Missoula Redevelopment Agency is planning an ice ribbon designed like a skating track at Caras Park to boost winter recreation in downtown Missoula—its feasibility study will begin early next year and take about nine months with public input shaping the final design.  KPAX
  • Missoula’s city used $350,000 in HOME funds and $534,000 in grants to rehabilitate 12 rental units at Fireweed and 161 at Creekside apartments—federal Community Development Block Grants also helped save 35 units at Orchard Gardens and fund five homeowner-assistance loans and 18 mobility ramps. The 2024 funding helped 47 households with energy efficiency and repairs, while future federal dollars for 2026 remain in debate in Congress.  Missoula Current

HEALTH NEWS

  • Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials suspect hemorrhagic disease is behind the deaths of roughly two dozen white-tailed deer near Eureka and about a dozen near Plains—lab tests have yet to confirm the virus. In southeast Montana, officials are monitoring reports of similar symptoms in deer and antelope along the Yellowstone River corridor—hunters are urged to report any sick or dead animals.  KPAX

  • Missoula locals voted on the 12 best bars in the city and the survey singled out spots like TnC and Katie's and Eagle Lodge—bars that offer choices from cozy dives to lively sports taverns. The poll gathered many responses from listeners who enjoy features such as cash-only service and pool tables.  Newstalk KGVO
  • Montana’s youth waterfowl and pheasant hunt weekend will run Sept 27 and 28 for kids 15 and under who have completed hunter education and will be accompanied by an adult — the event gives young hunters their first chance to hunt ducks, geese, and pheasants while following state rules — and it upholds a cherished local tradition.  Newstalk KGVO

  • Hellgate beat Sentinel 2 to 1 in a hard soccer game Tuesday at Sentinel High School. Junior Declan Reed scored a late goal — he helped his team win and keep an unbeaten run against Sentinel.  Missoulian
  • Brooks Davis became a key player for Montana when he scored two touchdowns to help the team come back against North Dakota—he also caught five passes for 98 yards and will play an important role in future games.  Missoulian
