Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 25th of September.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, city officials said that affordable housing in Missoula faces challenges as HUD funds for projects and vouchers may soon be cut—this puts developments like the Villagio Apartments at risk. They warned that without continued federal support many community initiatives might struggle to move forward.  Missoula Current

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Montana added nearly 600 first-generation college students this fall even as $500,000 in federal TRIO funding was frozen earlier this month. University officials said they will adjust support programs to serve these students—relying on state efforts as additional federal funds remain uncertain.  Missoulian
  • The Missoula County Public Schools board voted unanimously on Tuesday to join a lawsuit arguing the state is not meeting its constitutional promise to fund quality education. Attorney Andres Haladay said the planned filing—expected by the end of the year—is timed with the decennial study commission’s work on school funding ahead of 2027, an effort supported by Superintendent Micah Hill.  Missoulian
  • University of Montana enrollment grew for the 5th straight fall with over 11,060 students registered, including 592 first-generation students, 817 Native Americans, and 397 veterans — the school reports a 16% rise since 2021 and a record of 2,910 graduate students, making it the largest grad school in the state.  Missoula Current

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Natural History Center held a field trip that showed how layers of soil in Ninemile were made by floodwaters from Glacial Lake Missoula—experts say these soils help us learn about past floods and may guide future plans.  KPAX
  • Radd Icenoggle said the drought is drying up parts of Lolo Creek from Highway 93 to the Bitterroot River and causing the loss of crayfish and fish. He warned the drying creek is a canary in the coal mine for bigger ecosystem problems and will keep studying its changes—urging the community to change how the watershed is used.  KPAX
  • A listener asked why wildlife deaths in wildfires are rarely tracked, and University of Montana fire expert Philip Higuera said animals usually have time to move away when slow flames and smoke give them a warning—dramatic images like those in famous photos are the exception. He explained that most wildfires cause little direct harm to wildlife while nature renews itself.  Montana Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Missoula County received a $1.3 million grant to boost its wildfire planning—Wildfire Adapted Missoula—in neighborhoods like Rattlesnake and Grant Creek. Officials will add staff and contact homeowners over the next two years to help make homes more fire resistant.  KPAX
  • Downtown Missoula is working on a plan to convert Front and Main streets to two-way travel, update traffic signals, and add bidirectional bike lanes as part of a project now at 30% design, with construction planned to start in late 2026. The project is funded by a $24 million federal grant—an open house on Oct. 7 at the public library will let locals learn more.  Missoula Current
  • Missoula City Council amended its fee schedule on Wednesday to meet a new Montana law that limits impact fees on development. The change will lower fees for homes and projects—costing the city about $670,000 as new projects begin after October.  KPAX
  • Missoula voters will choose the candidate to fill the Ward 1 city council vacancy this November, and the winner will be appointed to complete the current term and start a new term in January. Council members are divided on whether to seat the winner immediately—some want a quick oath while others require the county canvass and certification first.  MontanaRightNow
