COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today in Missoula, events include the Fall Beer & Wine Fest at the Trough from 5 to 8 p.m. and on Sunday the Highlander Beer Goat Races at Highlander Brewing—with a parade at 1:30 p.m., races at 2 p.m. and winners crowned at 3 p.m.—while on Saturday the Montana Grizzlies versus Idaho Vandals football game is set for 8:15 p.m. on ESPN2, and additional events are ClimateFest at Caras Park at 10 a.m., the Fierce Fab Women's Running Festival at Fort Missoula starting at 9:30 a.m. and the Safe Kids Fair at Ogren Park from 12 to 3 p.m.  Newstalk KGVO

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Allegiant Airlines announced that Montana’s direct flights to L.A. will end after January 3 because LAX is too costly and unsanitary—forcing the airline to shift its service to Burbank. Travelers from Missoula and Bozeman will need to take connecting flights if they want to reach Hollywood.  Newstalk KGVO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city has revealed draft designs for a downtown street project that will convert Higgins Avenue from four lanes to three and shift Front and Main streets into two-way thoroughfares—plans that will adjust traffic downtown.  Missoulian
  • A recent census report shows Blaine County leads Montana with 84.3% of its residents born here—Liberty, Glacier, and Roosevelt counties follow at 83.2%, 80.7%, and 79.4% respectively. Counties with larger cities such as Gallatin and Missoula have lower native-born rates and may soon see more new residents than lifelong Montanans.  Newstalk KGVO
  • Missoula County received a $1,268,548 grant from the U.S. Forest Service that will fund wildfire planning such as home retrofits and new building guidelines— it is the only Montana recipient in this round of Community Wildfire Defense grants.  Missoula Current

SPORTS NEWS

  • Griz assistant coach Chris Cobb, entering his 12th season, said nonstop recruiting and tough scheduling make coaching in Missoula a challenging job—he noted the upcoming non-conference slate includes games against Louisville, Texas A&M and Stanford. He explained that travel difficulties and fewer home-and-home matchups with other conferences add to the workload as the team prepares for the season.  Newstalk KGVO
  • A group of 406 MT Sports panelists set predictions for Saturday's Big Sky football games, including a close contest where Montana is favored to beat Idaho at 8:15 p.m. on ESPN2+the panel also picked winners in other matchups with tight scores expected across the board.  Missoulian
  • Senior Cannon Panfiloff is a metal-loving left tackle for Montana’s Grizzlies who uses heavy metal tunes—like those from Metallica—to fuel his passion for football and credits his family and teammates for their support as he gets ready for big games.  Missoulian
