COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Humane Society of Western Montana is offering half-off adoption fees every Thursday in October—helping Missoula residents adopt shelter dogs at a lower cost.  Missoulian
  • The City of Missoula will spend $24 million on the Downtown Safety, Access and Mobility Project—making Front and Main streets two-way and expanding riverfront trails—while a crowd in Kalispell held a vigil Tuesday to honor the children killed since Oct. 7 attacks two years ago. Sukapi Lodge has opened as Montana’s first tribal-run mental health center—offering counseling, addiction recovery and youth services with cultural practices integrated in care.  KPAX

  • Montana filmmakers made a new comedy called 'Cuisine de l’Apocalypse' that shows zombies, robots and a chef who keeps cooking even when the world is in trouble, and it will stream on Amazon Prime Oct. 15. The film was shot in Bitterroot Valley (with local talent) and includes known actors (like Kevin Sorbo), blending local ideas with Hollywood names.  Newstalk KGVO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Carrie Hunt, a graduate student at the University of Montana in the 1980s, developed a bear spray that replaced bullets with a safer way to deter bears. She teamed with Bill Pounds to redesign the spray into a canister that creates a wide cone—meeting federal safety requirements for bear deterrents.  Missoula Current

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city is set to sign a design contract for a new Northside park and Scott Street improvements to serve a growing neighborhood where hundreds of new houses have been built over the last five years—this project will offer better public space and safer streets for local residents.  Missoulian
  • The City Council moved public comment to the start of its meeting yesterday, giving residents 20 minutes (three minutes per speaker) to share concerns not on the agenda. The change was made to keep meetings on schedule and ensure officials have enough time for their work.  Missoula Current
  • Traffic engineers in Missoula have developed a plan to improve safety on one of Montana’s busiest roads—from I-90 to Brooks—by modifying intersections and creating safer crossings for pedestrians and bikes. Planners will host pop-up events on October 14 at the Missoula Public Library and on October 15 at Grant Creek Town Center to gather community input.  Newstalk KGVO
  • Yesterday, the Missoula City Council moved public comment to the start of its meeting and set a 20-minute limit with three minutes per speaker—ensuring that official business began on time. Council members said the change would help avoid long delays and overtime costs while giving residents a brief chance to speak.  KPAX

  • University of Montana is hosting Homecoming Week with a Grizz soccer match today at 3:00 p.m., a Yell Night Pep Rally Friday at 8:00 p.m., and a Homecoming Parade Saturday at 10:00 a.m. along downtown Missoula that will feature bonfires, fireworks and celebrations honoring the team’s 30-year legacy.  Newstalk KGVO
  • Montana Grizzlies long snapper Grayson Pibal, in his fifth season with the team, played 33 games and was a second-team All-Big Sky performer last season—his recovery at UC Davis helped secure a key victory that led to a Big Sky title in 2023.   • Missoula PaddleHeads players Matthew Sox and Roberto Pena were named for elite awards from the Pioneer Baseball League — the honor shows their strong on-field performance.  Missoulian
  • Montana receiver and returner Michael Wortham has led the Montana Grizzlies by ranking first in the Big Sky and second in the FCS for all-purpose yards through five games — his strong play is expected to boost the team further this season.  Missoulian
