COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Missoula will host Conversations on a Bench for World Homelessness Day—shelter organizations in Kalispell and Great Falls will also participate in the event.  Missoulian
  • If you are not going to homecoming, you can enjoy five events in Missoula this weekend—today, Bert Kreischer performs at Adams Center and The Motet plays at Wilma; The Hunchback of Notre Dame runs from today to Sunday at Missoula Children's Theatre, Lakeview performs at Top Hat on Sunday, Turner Farms hosts its 16th Annual Pumpkin Festival on Saturday and Sunday, and NFL Bingo begins Sunday at Tamarack Brewing at 5 p.m.  Newstalk KGVO

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Orvis is closing 36 stores nationwide due to tariff pressures that push up costs — the change could reduce gear availability for Montana anglers. Local fly shops in Missoula may face higher prices — they are expected to adjust their offerings as a result.  Newstalk KGVO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Sentinel High School students in Missoula planted 35 new trees this week to restore their campus after a windstorm in July. Teacher Ezra Schearer organized the tree planting during homecoming week with help from community partners (Trees for Missoula and local fundraisers) so the students can invest in their school’s future.  KPAX

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The IRS taxpayer assistance office on Palmer Street closed on Wednesday due to a government shutdown—leaving some Missoula taxpayers without help ahead of the Oct. 15 filing extension deadline.  Missoula Current
  • Proposed safety improvements are planned for Reserve Street from I-90 to Brooks Street as the Missoula Metropolitan Planning Organization, Montana Department of Transportation and the City of Missoula use public feedback and 2024 crash data to design key upgrades—such as redesigned intersections and lighting on the Clark Fork River Bridge. Public meetings will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Missoula Public Library and on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Grant Creek Town Center to gather community input—ensuring local voices are part of the final plan.  MontanaRightNow
  • Missoula County has funded a program to help food stamp recipients buy locally grown fruits and vegetables at farmers markets—supporting local farmers and ranchers by expanding access to fresh produce.  Missoulian
  • Local residents attended an open house at the Missoula Public Library to learn about planned downtown projects in the Garden City led by Downtown Safety Access and Mobility. City council members explained that the project—now at a 30-percent design milestone—includes Higgins Avenue improvements, Front/Main restoration, Riverfront Trail connectivity, and downtown signal optimization with construction set to last about 36 months.  MontanaRightNow
  • A new state law in Montana increases penalties for fleeing law enforcement by creating an offense called aggravated fleeing—repeat offenders or those who drive recklessly, cause over $5,000 in damage, leave the state, or seriously injure someone will face felony charges. Local law enforcement say the tougher penalty is meant to keep roads safer.  KPAX

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Riverfront Trails Subdivision in Lower Miller Creek will fix water issues by requiring the transfer of water rights to the city and alerting property owners when needed. Tollefson Properties LLC finished Phase 1 on time and will ask for changes to later phases—set for 2028 and 2030—as the city checks water capacity.  Missoula Current
