COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Last Saturday, about 30 Browning students attended their first Montana Griz game at Washington-Grizzly Stadium thanks to non-profit Griz Kidz—an organization that gives underprivileged kids the chance to enjoy college football. The event was extra special as Tommy Running Rabbit became the first ever Browning player on the team, adding pride for the community.  Newstalk KGVO

  • Missoula’s Jersey Mike’s is opening a new Southside location at 2810 Brooks Street in the old Cricket Wireless building—work continues to remodel the space into a functioning sub shop. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Montana fell 0.9 cents in the last week and now average $3.06 per gallon today. They are 8.9 cents lower than a month ago and 12.5 cents lower than a year ago, with some Missoula stations still charging about $3.08 per gallon.  Newstalk KGVO

  • UM Pollner professor Annie Gowen will talk about how our attention is fading and what that means for news—she will share what she learned from cutting down screen time and explain how this gap might change news reporting.   • On Monday, University of Montana leaders said nearly one third of students come from families with low income—making them eligible for Pell grants. They said the university will work to secure funding amid federal cuts and a government shutdown.  KPAX

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation gave a grant to help reduce wildfire danger in Missoula’s Pattee Canyon after an estimated 27 fires started nearby during this fire season. The county worked with homeowners to make their land more fire safe — about 400 fires since 2021 burned over 4,000 acres before threats to lives and property emerged.  KPAX

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Crews will soon flip the switch on the Bitterroot Trail lighting system—running 2.7 miles through Missoula—as part of Urban Renewal District II improvements, with work set to finish by late October or early November. The nearly $1.7 million project targets public safety and will allow residents to use the trail after dark.  Missoula Current
  • The Swan Valley Planning Committee will submit a draft Neighborhood Plan today that includes an Existing Conditions Report and a proposed Future Land Use Map to advise county officials on limited zoning for future sales—ensuring small family-run businesses and rural character remain protected.   • Thousands of Montana hunters will start the general big game season this Saturday and will hunt until Nov. 30. Game wardens stress safety and urge hunters to report any mistakes – this self-reporting leads to lower penalties than being caught as a poacher.  KPAX
