Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 22nd of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Missoula Humane Society now has Dixie available for adoption; the four-year-old dog loves mountain hikes, swimming, and quiet naps after growing out of her puppyhood. The shelter will not accept adoptions Thursday (Oct 23) because it is holding a free pet vaccination and microchip clinic from 2:00 to 5:30 pm.  Newstalk KGVO
  • On Monday, the Missoula Area Chamber of Commerce named United Way of Missoula County its 2025 Nonprofit of the Year — the award highlights its leadership, community impact and strong partnerships with local businesses and nonprofits. The organization has worked for over 90 years to support kids’ education, family health and housing stability in Missoula.  Missoula Current
  • The University of Montana is launching its 26th annual Can the Cats Food Drive on Saturday, Nov. 8 to fight hunger in a friendly contest with Montana State University. Donation drop-offs will be available across Missoula and major collection events are planned on Nov. 15 and during the first quarter of the football game on Nov. 22.  MontanaRightNow

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Montana drivers face a 42% higher fatality rate on Halloween because of speeding, DUIs, and hitting wildlife—residents are urged to slow down and pick a sober driver to help keep everyone safe as they celebrate All Hallows’ Eve.  Newstalk KGVO

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Dave's Hot Chicken will open in Missoula on November 14 — taking over the old Mod Pizza spot — and plans to offer a fresh range of spicy sandwiches and sliders for local fans. Franchise owner Wyatt Prime said the expansion comes after a busy start in Billings and that more outlets are planned for Great Falls and Helena.  KPAX

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, October 21, about 53,000 acres in the Cabinet Mountains were protected under a conservation easement after the Montana Land Board approved its second phase, and the Darby Rodeo Association worked with Red Eye Rodeo to open a free gear closet using $22,000 in funds. Twenty-seven wildfires were reported near Pattee Canyon this season, prompting local efforts to boost wildfire prevention—adding to ongoing safety measures.  KPAX
  • Last season, low water flows on the Blackfoot River forced local outfitters to change their boat trips, and John Herzer (owner of Blackfoot River Outfitters) said record lows and fishing restrictions shortened trips. He warned that continuing drought and low flows will trouble river recreation in coming years (raising concerns for local businesses).  KPAX
  • NASA research over the past 24 years shows that Montana’s Big Sky and the rest of Earth are getting darker because more solar energy is absorbed and less is reflected—this change may affect the climate. The study finds that the Northern Hemisphere may warm faster than the Southern Hemisphere—factors like cloud cover and snow play a role.  Newstalk KGVO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montana wolf advocacy groups have asked to intervene in a lawmakers' suit challenging wolf quotas because they worry the commission and FWP might settle with plaintiffs without a full defense.  Missoulian
  • On Monday, Montana Superintendent Susie Hedalen issued a letter to all school districts warning that displaying flags not recognized by the government violates state law—this decision follows a week after the Missoula County School Board allowed pride flags in school facilities, which are seen as official by the City of Missoula. Hedalen stated that schools must maintain neutrality because funding and state accreditation depend on adhering to these rules.  MontanaRightNow
