Good morning, Missoula. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 23rd of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Montana Food Bank Network opened its new 56,000-square-foot facility in Missoula to double its capacity and support 330 partner agencies—this expansion comes amid uncertainty over federal SNAP benefits as the government shutdown delays November aid. The network expects the increased space to help it serve more hungry Montanans while policymakers finalize future food assistance plans.  KPAX
  • KYSSMas For Kids will be held on Friday, December 5th to raise funds for local children and organizations through donations, an auction, and community support—aiming to exceed last year's $130K. The event will kick off with a radio-thon at 6:00 a.m. on 94.9 KYSS FM, and businesses or individuals can contribute by donating or bidding on auction items.  Newstalk KGVO

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Missoula County is updating its floodplain maps for the first time in 50 years to show current flood risks along the Clark Fork and Lower Bitterroot rivers — the new maps are online and property owners can get help through the Floodplain Administration Program.  Newstalk KGVO
  • A climate scientist and forest advocates warned that the proposed Bitterroot Front Project may raise wildfire risks and hurt old-growth forests by allowing commercial logging over 216 square miles and new road construction. They noted that recent fire damage and research show that thinning the forest—meant to reduce fire hazards—could actually lead to more severe wildfires.  Missoula Current

HEALTH NEWS

  • A data breach at Blue Cross Blue Shield Montana has put sensitive medical info and social security numbers of 462,000 customers at risk. The leak first occurred almost a year ago but was only reported to state regulators this month.  Missoulian
