CRIME NEWS

  • The University of Montana removed a business professor — who allegedly fired a weapon outside a Florence bar — after he was charged with felony criminal endangerment.  Missoulian
  • The University of Montana dismissed business professor Anthony Richard Pawlisz after he was charged with criminal endangerment for allegedly pulling a gun on another man during a bar altercation in Florence on Aug. 17 — witnesses said he fired a shot into the air before pointing the handgun at the man.  KPAX

CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend in Montana will feature Halloween on Friday for the first time since 2014 and Montana Millionaire lottery tickets on sale Saturday at 5:30 a.m.—bringing excitement to communities statewide. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Montana ranchers Kyle and Lee Kelly at Paws Up Ranch have combined Corriente cattle with virtual fencing technology — which warns and then shocks cows that stray—to protect their Angus herd from predators and cut costs during a severe drought in the Blackfoot River valley. They now pay about 40% of the cost of physical fencing mandated by the BLM while other local ranchers are showing interest in this flexible system for improved emergency response.  Missoula Current

  • New data shows that in 2024, full-time working women in Montana earned 83 cents for every dollar that men earned, up from 77 cents in 2012 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.   • After Wildlife Services reported signs of wild pigs in Phillips County, state officials trapped about 100 swine showing feral behavior near Malta. On Oct 18, Montana food banks received between 8,000 and 14,000 pounds of pork from Producer Partnership—a nonprofit USDA-inspected facility—while trapping operations continue.  KPAX

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Department of Public Health and Human Services confirmed that SNAP benefits for nearly 78,000 Montanans will not be issued on November 1 due to the federal shutdown, leaving local food banks to brace for a surge in demand—especially in small communities facing economic challenges.
