- ➤ On Dec. 6, Murdoch's Ranch & Home Supply hosted a reindeer meet-and-greet featuring Candy and Elsa, where families enjoyed photo ops, treats and holiday cheer in Missoula. Jordan Duncan raised the animals on his farm and arranges their seasonal visits to bring local magic closer to residents. KPAX

- ➤ In the 1920s, Missoula hosted lively dances at venues including the outdoor pavilion at Greenough Park and later Tokyo Gardens at the fairgrounds—built with a Japanese theme and ample space for dancing and refreshment—before it declined in the late 1930s. Missoula Current
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Gas prices in Montana dropped 10.1¢ over the past week to an average of $2.85 per gallon as of Monday, Dec. 15 — although they remain 8.3¢ higher than a year ago and 13.9¢ lower than a month ago. KPAX

- ➤ University of Montana students are earning prestigious scholarships worldwide — even outcompeting Ivy League peers. University President Seth Bodnar shared the achievement during the latest UM Minute feature. KPAX
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Western Montana drought conditions improved to moderate levels after a strong October, while northern central regions now face severe drought following a dry September. Snow in the mountains and rain in lower areas may help replenish the winter snowpack. Montana Public Radio
- ➤ State wildlife officials closed several Wildlife Management Areas until May so elk can have safe winter refuge — reducing human interference may help boost healthy spring offspring. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks said the closures are designed to reduce stress and encourage population growth. KPAX
- ➤ Wildlife managers are using drones with thermal cameras today to safely steer grizzlies away from properties—an approach that emerged after risky encounters and now supports research for future features like remote bear spray delivery at the University of Montana. Montana Public Radio
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Congress revived the Secure Rural Schools program this month to support rural schools and local infrastructure in Montana. The program provided $16 million in 2023 to 30 counties — Lincoln County received $4 million — and the next funding round will come in April. Montana Public Radio
- ➤ Missoula Public Library backers are surveying voter interest for a funding boost to support staff and services. The presentation of survey results at a Library Board meeting on Jan. 28 at 6 p.m.—which may lead to a levy request—will guide future funding decisions. KPAX
- ➤ Residents and officials in Swan Valley approved the updated 2025 Neighborhood Plan on Nov. 18 to protect rural land, support small-scale businesses, and maintain clean water and air. The Council sent the plan to the Missoula County Consolidated Planning Board for review today in Missoula. Missoula Current

- ➤ Montanans can legally harvest roadkill meat under state rules that allow collecting roadkilled deer, elk, antelope & moose with a free salvage permit from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks within 24 hours. REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ Riverside Contracting Inc. is in early stages of planning a 64-acre gravel mine along Highway 200 between Johnsrud Fishing Access and Bonner, having submitted a compliance permit to Missoula County. The developer replied to a county letter and said it will gather environmental data — details will follow. KPAX
