COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Invasive Species Action Network hosted an aquatic pet rehoming event at the University Center's West Atrium on Tuesday (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) (under the Don't Let it Loose campaign) as local pet stores and rescues took in fish, turtles, and frogs to help protect native species.  KPAX

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Missoula Rural Fire District reminds residents to prepare for wildfire season as May is wildfire preparedness month and advises homeowners to clear debris, remove flammable items, and set up an emergency plan—steps that reduce risks during fire outbreaks.  KPAX
  • After losing a lawsuit in November, Wildlife Services is preparing a full environmental impact statement to study how its predator removal methods affect grizzly bears — covering both lethal and nonlethal approaches — with completion ordered by November 1, 2026. The agency is accepting public comments on the five alternatives until May 14.  Missoula Current
  • Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks says bear spray should be replaced after three to five years and disposed of properly; large amounts may be taken to approved landfills while small quantities can be handled at park stations. It advises that if nearby disposal options are unavailable, users should empty the canister in a remote area—wrap it in a plastic bag before discarding to protect waste management staff.  KPAX

HEALTH NEWS

  • As tick season has begun with warmer weather in Missoula, local veterinarians advise pet owners to use flea and tick preventatives—vets stress early action and careful check-ups can help keep pets safe.
